Laura Sebastian-Coleman
I have been managing the Data Quality team at Galaxy since 2003, the shared data warehouse
for UnitedHealth Group, a large US health insurance company. My journey to this position was
somewhat indirect, including a year working in Vienna, Austria, graduate
school completing my Ph.D. in literature. After two years teaching I joined the business world as a public
relations specialist for a manufacturing company. This connected me with web development and led to a
position in IT at an insurance company and my first exposure to the negative effects of inconsistent data
on high-level executives.
When I am not practicing data quality, I generally spend time with my family. We all enjoy cycling. My daughter and I like to quilt together. I am also involved with volunteer activities – such as Habitat for Humanity – through my church. My reading habits are still strongly influenced by my graduate school experience. I tend to read thematically. A few years ago, it was physics, then sea stories, which evolved into a focus on Ernest Shackelton; currently I am on a Roosevelt kick.
