Ivan Schotsmans
Ivan Schotsmans is a subject matter expert in business intelligence and information quality working on international projects since 1997. He has worked for service providers Origin and Deloitte, and since mid 2005 has run his own company.
"My strong point is bridging the gap between business and IT, due to my technical background and my experience in those global projects. In 2004 I started organizing BI training events in Belgium with global subject matter experts (Steve Hoberman, Larry English, …).
"I am currently running bi-community.org, a Business Intelligence community specialized in organizing BI trainings and events for several global organizations (TDWI, IIBA).
"As a Business Intelligence Subject Matter Expert, at the end of the information supply chain, we need always to defend the correctness of our reports/scorecards. A conference with Larry English did the rest. Since then I try to add the information quality touch to all my projects. My approach is to set-up, in parallel with a BI implementation, a data governance organization to work on the correctness of data. The focus is to start with the most important information assets for a company and then slowly grow to other information fields. I use one golden rule in this approach: I am willing to set-up a data governance structure but if you can’t convince the business to lead and participate it’s a waste of money."
